Diving in with an introduction

Introduce Yourself

Hello

I joined here earlier in a mini crisis wondering whether I could or should have dreadlocks to be discover that I already do, they just need a little TLC and a lot of maturing.

I have found my experience today to be very liberating, when I came on here and just blurted out my ignorant noob questions I was met with a friendly and welcoming response and some great advice which has actually completely changed the way I view my hair. What was something that I didn't discuss and that I hid away under hats and bandannas only hours ago is already becoming something which I am becoming comfortable with and even excited about.

I have read some of the discussions and am genuinely taken back with how for so many people their dreadlocks are so much more than a hairstyle but a reflection of their spiritualjourneys and life paths. Just this deeper understanding to what dreadlocks can mean for the people who wear them I can see why it has become something which has naturally crept in to my life. Over the past 5 years I have been through some amazing spiritual transformations which have reshaped me in nearly every way. It seems almost silly that I have been doing dreadlock prevention and trying to rescue my neglected hair for so long. The discussions I have read today have made me see my hair as a natural progression of myjourneyto be embraced and welcomed rather than resisted.

I am looking forward to reading more of the discussions and hopefully joining in and making some new friends.

Thanks for the hospitality ;-))

Much love and peace

The unintentional serial dreadlocker needs some advice!

Dreading Methods

Thanks again for the information about how I should look after my hair in the future. I just want to say how much just joining here and asking this question has changed my life, yes my life. Just in a few hours a whole psychological burden has disappeared, I am not going to be reaching for my hat and covering my hair in shame anymore. I thought I was quite a way from being able to say I had locks and that I would join here to find that dreads were something totally different to neglected knotty hair and that I was just a lazy cow who needed to buy a hair brush.

Making the psychological change from apermanent bad hair day to the start of what is dangerously close to really cool hair style (sorry I know it's more than a style couldn't find the right word). But this psychological change in how I view my own hair and someways myself has been very liberating and positive. I am really glad that I found this place and appreciative of the welcome.

I have began ripping my hair in to more defined locks just spending a few minutes at a time throughout the day and I can actually see the difference already. I am sure with the advice and information from this site I am going to have hair that I am proud of before I know it.

Great thanks, I know you are right about the shampoos there is a photo my friend took a week ago and my hair hadn't been washed all week and it was quite obvious that there were dreads coming from the top but I washed it last night and today the ones on top have fallen away.....well I feel happier today knowing that I don't have a nightmare hair problem just the start of a brand new look.......going over to check out the soap

Thanks again ;-))

Peace

OK I have taken a few pics because on the surface it doesn't look to bad, the knotting is underneath and is only now starting to show through, my hair is freshly washed and after a couple of days of not washing the top of my hair looks more knotty. As you can see the real knots are underneath I have several proper dreads in there already.

Dreading Methods

Haha great it seems I am further along the path to dreadlocks than I thought. I have already got the problem with the big chunk which is matted, right now it is loosely tied up with a couple of bit dangling and it doesn't look too bad, I guess I am looking at my hair different now rather than looking at the mess I am looking at the potential to dreadlock it. If I let it down from the loose pony tail it's just a case of the big clumps really which I needs to some how rip apart into dreads, I should have started doing this from day 1 however I like I said I am the unintentional dreader. Thanks for the heads up about shampoos, I quite a bit for my current shampoo because I really dislike too much chemical and artificial junk in my products and it's from a all natural shop which I just love. I am happy to replace it with something which will be better for my hair (or should I say baby dreads) but would want it to be as natural as possible, can someone point me to a good product? Thanks for the replies.

Dreading Methods

Hey I have just joined up here, thought I could use some advice or maybe just a telling off and a hair brush.

My hair is the product of genuine neglect, there is never enough time in the day for me to do everything that I want and brushing my hair doesn't feature high on my list. The more knotty it becomes the bigger the job of brushing it becomes and it falls further and further down my to-do list.

This has been a recurring pattern for the last 5 years, I did cut it all off in early 2011 because it had become a birds nest. My hair grows fast and so it is quite long again now. Over the past year it has been brought back from states ofimpendingdreadlock a couple of times by a concerned family member who took it in to their own hands to brush it. Generally I tie it up and when I go out I stick abandannaor hat over it.

My hair is washed about once or twice a week with organic shampoo but doesn't need a lot of washing. My hair looks thick but it isn't really it's fine but there is loads of it. Itnaturallycurls and it knots so quickly, I can wake up just after one night and be faced with a monster knot to brush out, if I have been on a camp for any time then it's a pretty knotty affair.

Currently my hair hasn't been brushed for around 3 months. It has been tied up quite a lot and there are some pretty big knots. I am not sure whether it would be possible to brush them out without having another pretty drastic hair cut.

I am thinking now that maybe I am suited to having dreadlocked hair and should just allow it to grow that way, it will not more purposeful rather than neglected. I am wondering if I could turn my existing knotfest in to dreads or if I would have to start again from scratch? Could I try separating individual dreadlocks out of the existing situation?

Thanks

;-))
