All the right reasons

Life Issues Facing Dreads

What it comes down to is; it's YOUR hair, and your life. As long as you are comfortable and happy with it, that's all that matters. You aren't hurting anyone by having dreads. Sometimes certain family members may feel the need to try to influence with their opinions, but as long as you're happy, I hope they understand in time. Stay strong, you're among friends here. :)

Off topic rant. Need to vent...I swear I got the heart of Buddah and Dracula combined...

General Talk

Not settled, but once someone has decided to have that sort of outlook on things, there is no use in furthering the discussion. Nothing can be gained, just more arguing. So it's better to walk away rather than keep throwing flames. When someone is truly set in those ways, with those views, nothing can be said to sway them.

This was posted over a month ago, so I'm more interested in finding out how the situation was resolved.

I understand in extreme stress things can come out that aren't meant, but you might consider editing your post to exclude the woman and "FAGGOT" bashing. REALLY do not appreciate those types of derogatory statements, and it hurts your message. Unless you really believe things like that. But then, that's a rant for another thread.

Truly, I hope the situation was resolved without tragedy...

Show Us Your Recovery Pictures

crochet and dread tools recovery

You're 2.5 yrs. photo really gives me hope for my babies.

I had mine TnR'd 3 months ago, but what I didn't know was that she did some crochet work again too. :-/ I know that's her preferred method, but I wish she would have told me she was going to crochet them too (she did say she would use the hook to catch any strays, but I didn't realize she used it as part of the method until she posted pics. saying she did). That explains why they felt so tight the first week...

Mine are definitely fluffing out nicely, so I do appreciate my dready creator's work, just gives me something to look forward to when they mature :)

I have been recovering from crocheting for 2,some years now. I crocheted my dreads as a way to get them started. This is NOT something i regret as I believe it to be part of the experience and history I have with my hair, but I must admit it is not something I would recommend others to do. It leaves the scalp sore and the hair scratchy and uncomfortable. Here are the pictures to show the progress.

I will definitely try those. :) I don't generally use conditioner cuz I have had issues with oily hair/scalp, but now I will stop using it all together. Thanks again for the helpful tips SE!!!

As for the Dr.Bronners soap...which should I use? The bars or liquid?

Yes, I do have dreads forming. I was actually surprised at how fast and how well they are forming! :D I just separate them when I wake up and after I get out of the shower to avoid big clumps/congos. There is still a bit of loose hair, but for the most part it is coming together as dreads very well (I think/hope :P)

I wash with Garnier Fructis Triple Nutriton Shampoo and Conditioner during the weekend (when I'm at my moms) and Treseme Deep Cleansing Shampoo (only shampoo during the week to avoid oily build up) when I'm at home.

My journey so far

General Talk

I am approximately 10 or 11 days into my dreaded journey. I am using the natural method. My rules of thumb: KEEP IT CLEAN , KEEP IT DRY , AND SEPARATE . I have tried to separate my hair with ponytail holders, rubber bands, etc, and that was NOT a good idea. They just got stuck and mangled so I carefully had to cut them out. Not to mention the pressure and pull it was causing. So, I just rip the sections apart that I don't want to grow together and become one dread. I do that at least twice a day to make sure they do not grow together. When I go out I put it up into a ponytail, and it looks pretty cool with all the little tails. :3

The only downfall(s): As of right now I look, well, like I haven't brushed my hair in 10 or 11 days! *lol* Also, since the excess hair isn't getting brushed out, my scalp is a little more itchy than usual, so more frequent washing is needed than with my normal hair.

My inspiration(s): Quinne from SG. Whitney Mixter from The Real "L" Word. Any other chicks that rock dreads! ***Also a HUGE thank you to Soaring Eagle!!***

But mainly, I was deciding what I wanted to dress up as for Halloween. So upon browsing the Party City site, I find this: http://www.partycity.com/product/voodoo+dreads+wig.do?sortby=priceAscend&pp=100&size=all&navSet=170630

First I think, "Oh wow, that looks really cool." Then, "Oh...wow...that looks really fake..."

BUT, I decided then that I wanted REAL dreads, not just for a Halloween costume ensemble but as a regular look.

I'm pretty excited about this experience.

Will my basic hair/scalp issues make dreading that much harder?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

:D

That would be awesome!

I have noticed a difference when washing my hair in hot and rinsing it with ice cold water. Definitely gonna try using the baking soda, sea salt, and thyme oil/tea!

Thanks again for being so helpful!!!
