what would y'all suggest for removing / hiding the existing flakes? I havedarkhair so they stand out when they appear. then they get tangled into the dread and stay there.. anyone know of any secrets I don;t knwo about? is there a method of ridding your dreads of pre existing flakes? <3 <3

yep, cut them off and just re attached them, they're doing really well to my surprise, but i have to go through all that scalp moodyness all over again until my head gets used to them again. just wanting to be sure that i can prevent dandruff / make it go away if it does happen during the settling period! :) (I have almost black hair, so dandruff would be incredibly noticeable andembarrassing!!

BeckBeck has attached some extensions to her 4" hair to cover up some of the bald patches she has. She had dreads for 4 years, then cut them off 6 months ago and has now reattached some of her own dreads.

What exactly do you mean by reattached your dreads that almost sounds like a hair extension situation

ok. wanted to know what you guys do! how do you prevent dandruff, what to you do to stop it when you have it, and most of all, how do you get the existing flakes out of your dreads? i had this problem years ago, and now i have re attached my dreads, i would like to know what to do before it happens again!

roots too small?

General Questions

yess i know, i was hesitant, but couldn't bare to be dreadless for much longer, and bald patches kind of kill a girls self esteem lol. if they thicken to the section size, i'll be fine, i made sure the extensions were the same size as the section sizes, thanks for putting my mind at ease!! off to go put some tea tree oil on my scalp, i forgot how bad the new dread itchies can be lol

roots too small?

General Questions

ok so when i re attached my dreads, i had a few extensions put in too, because i didn;t have enough to cover my head. I had about 4 inch hair, so i made a teeny dread puff and attached the extension to that. the attachment worked really well, and they're very blended and i had no hair breakage (took a lot of time but worth it), but i worry, my root section looks a little small for the dread... not by much, and defninitely not enough to break at the roots- i was just wondering, will my real hair grow into a thinner dread, so my dread will be thick at the bottom and thin at the top? or will it thicken up as it naturally dreads. thanks! (no I don;t want to take the extensions out >___< )

Any parents with dreads here?

General Questions

I originally cut my dreads off because my parents had been going nuts at me for my dreads since I had my son. i cut them off when he was one year old, because my mother had been going on about how he'll suffer because of it, and beembarrassedand teased because of it, he will have to see the dirty looks i get and i will look like a bad mother or a hippie who doesn't let their child eat anything but grass etc..
I just re attached them because i feel wrong without them, i somehow have a white girl afro made of big kinky ringlets so nothing other than chemical treatments makes my hair sit nicely (except dreads of course!)..
I was just wondering, do you ever face social issues because you're a parent with locs? has there ever been an issue with you child being teased or embarassed by other kids over it? what do you do? I would love to hear from other dreaded parents and hopefully have my mind put at ease a bit! personally of course i think dreads are beautiful and a symbol of patience in a person but not a lot of others see that >__<

dreadlocks and how they change you

Member Journals and Timelines

I hope you kept them.. i cut mine for the same reasons, a horrible past and as a marker for a fresh start (plus family not shutting up about them) but then regretted it, 6 months later i've re attached them. they are an older journey, but they represent everything that has shaped me into who i am today so I can't be without them. hope you kept them! just in case!

well natural dreads are supposed to be messy and let to do their own thing, not gels and root rubbing- glad you realized this, i did the same!! you'll start to see true beauty in your messy locs once you make that realization that they're to be untamed. mine were a mane of mess and I felt amazing sporting them- though now they've matured to the point that they're uniform and neat but I had a great time with that mess! ever changing it is :)
