General Talk

Wish I was a genius, or even just had a better connection! I'm no help with that stuff... Sorry :( As for losing traffic, though, it is an issue, but not so big, because as soon as we launch the new website I can start on helping in a way I AM good at,- promoting! It'll be alright, do what you think is right SE. Whenever we move in, we'll get new traffic, I'm sure of it!

Day 3 and need advice.

Introduce Yourself

Yes, don't fret! Loose roots and loose ends are prevalent even in mature locks. Think of it this way, you want the hair to have room to move so it can get tangled and lock up, and that room at the top is basically utilized as space for that! :) so don't worry. Wear a wool hat this winter and just forget about them in between washes (after washing you should separate them, thats all!) The loose hair will get picked up by locks as it sees fit. Your hair is gonna do what is good and healthy for it if you let it! :)

Help

Introduce Yourself

Hey,they really don't look so bad! :) The answer to your problem is time, dear. Crocheting, twisting and ripping, in the end just slows and hinders the process. My advice to you is to not do anything for as long as you can bear it, and don't let your friends, especially those without experience, stick poky things in your locks. Separate them every time you wash, which can be anywhere 1-2-3 weeks in between, or more. I'd suggest washing with 1cup baking soda/a gallon of water solution. Just pour it over, wait 10 min, rinse out generously. If they start getting too dry, and you get worried, try Dr. Bronner's! You can get it at Trader Joe's and other good stores like that. Then shed your fear of loops, my dear! ;) You will learn to love them through the patience you acquire in letting go! <3 Love to ya, good luck!

new dreads and shampoo

General Questions

I don't know anything about the PEG to be honest, I'm not sure what that is :p feel free to enlighten me! hahaha :) I can tell you what worked for me: I used a cup of baking soda/gallon of water solution once or twice a week. You have to leave it in for 10-20 min and then rinse it out with lots of water. It really helped them lock up, but I didn't do much work to them to begin with so I don't know how important the locking factor is to you right now. A couple of months into using the baking soda I started spacing out the washes more. It was more of a lazy decision, I just didn't think I needed to wash them. Then maybe 4 months into it I used Dr. Bronner's for the first time. I just soak the dreadies in water and then add Dr. B's by putting some in my hands and rubbing them together, then on my hair. I like to really scrub the scalp and not use much on the dreads to minimize residue, but once in a blue moon it's nice to use a bunch of Dr. B's and really give them a good, deep wash. It is time consuming though, because to rinse it out you really have to practice patience and use up alot of time and water. It's only once in a long while, though, so I suppose that's okay. I just did that for the first time and I am 1 year and 7 months into it :p
My personal dreading choice was 50/50 laziness/environmental so I am drawn to encourage you to give Dr. B's another try and use more water to rinse. If you don't like the oiliness (I think your hair does soak it up in a matter of a couple of days, though) maybe you could use the baking soda solution as afterwash and then rinse with water again. I've tried that a few times and it worked fine for me :) I've never paid much attention to my hair though so maybe I just didn't notice anything wrong with it. Haha!

Hey man :) I am so glad I was able to find this by doing a simple general search for "off grid" in the forums, this site is great SE ;) I am adding you brother, and sending you an inbox message! It's been over a year since you posted this, I'm so curious,- how's everything going!?

Here's my inbox message in case it doesnt get to you for some reason:
My name is Kornelija, my fiance Dan and I are 24 and we have this... loose plan for our future. What's certain is some land, building our own earthship (which is a type of house that takes advantage of upcycling waste materials like used tires, and a grey water system, geothermal heating, that kinda stuff) and clean, good food. Dan just signed up for an electrical program where he hopes to learn all about wind turbines and solar panels, and I study ecology and horticulture. Basically we don't care about degrees, we're dedicated to learning everything we need to know to sustain ourselves and others while working with the earth and universal forces (think physics :) ). I've been daydreaming of finding people like yourself, and helping you achieve your goals while learning in return. You sound very resourceful, we could learn a lot from you! We would love the opportunity.

Would you be interested in accepting our help in September 2015? I'm sort of thinking in semesters,- I could keep trucking through the summer, then take the fall off right as our lease is up at the end of August. This would give us enough time to save up for this great experience! We love backpacking, so we would probably tent it while we built a temporary living structure. Then we each have two hands that are at your disposal :) We're seriously eager for an experience just like this. I know September is far off, but given our living situation it should only show that we're serious about this :) We would love to help Sept.-December.

Methods for "tidying up" young dreads

Dread Maintenance

I know what you mean! Some people like my manager for example still say theyre not real dreads hahah they only see me with my hair up and it still from certain angles passes as just curly haha

Angel Frye said:

Even now, at around 9 months my mom still harasses me about my hair. Just Sunday she started in on me and I had to let her know, yet AGAIN, why I quit brushing my hair. "It's not a statement. It's either this or I shave my head. Take your pick. Because my hair is too much of a pain in the ass to even try to brush anymore. I CRY it hurts so badly. You don't have to deal with that mess every day. I do. It's my hair. Leave me alone."

Sometimes it is too much and I do just twist my hair up in a bun. Eventually I'll stop doing that, though.

Thankfully, you'll be out in three months or so and you won't have to listen to them quite so frequently. Wear a hat. Tie them up. Something. ANYThing to not lose the progress you've already made.

What's really intriguing to me about natural neglect dreadlocks when put up in a bun is that on certain people you can't even tell that the person has dreadlocks. It just looks like super curly hair.
