When your hair locks..

General Questions

Yes, where you touch your hair more will probably be slower to dread.I'm just coming up to 9 months and around my face and neck where the hair gets pushed back a lot I still have some loose hair and some looser dreads whileI have some that are really tightly dreaded on the top and back. However there are other places that are also being slower which don't get touched and lots of stages in between, it's very random and always exciting to see what will happen next! Don't worry, it will all get there in its own good time :)

Extreme shrinkage

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

Coming up to nine months starting from waist length hair and my tightest dreadies are around 4 or 5 inches now. I'm mostly finding it amusing becauseI grew my hair from about an inch long to waist length before so I'm not too worried about growing it again -although not being able to tie the top ones back is a little annoying!

Any polyamorous dreadies?

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

At one point in the past I was living in a menage a trois situation with two men. It seemed to work pretty well for a while but eventually one relationship and then the other came to an end. I don't think I'd try it again - there's far too much potential for hurting someone or being hurt.

General Questions

I also started with very long hair. I just stopped brushing and have been separating a lot to make quite thin dreads. Here is a photo showing my shrinkage after 8 weeks:

I am expecting it to shrink even more before it's fully dreaded! However, I don't feel that it is the hair that I have now that is important, that's just how my dreads will start. It is the hair that will grow in future and lock up at the roots that will make the "real" dreads.

Natural way to make a single dread?

Dreading Methods

I did much the same thing as you. Originally I intended to have just a few dreads hidden at the back and then started reading this site and was inspired to let the whole lot do as it pleased ;D

You said that your hair is naturally quite oily which will make it more difficult for your knots to stay in. I'd advise you to wash it with something other than just water, maybe a couple of times a week, until you find out what works well for you. I like to use the bicarb and acv rinse system, which you will find outlined many times on this forum, twice a week with plain water in between and I find it has reduced the oiliness of my hair considerably.

Enjoy your natural journey!

The back of my head -- it refuseth to dread.

General Questions

Is it cold enough where you are to wear a woollen scarf/shawl up round your collar? I'm pretty sure my hair rubbing on my scarf each time I turned my head was what got the back of my hair going so fast.

My slow to dread side is on the right because I started sleeping on my left when pregnant as it's meant to be better for your digestion to lie that way!
