Confidence

Introduce Yourself

Best answer I have heard to this question.... many of us have had this same question run thru our heads.

My best advice is to find a way to make fun of yourself if a joking way. I used to get comments about "where the drugs are at". I don't do any drugs. So I used to ask "What, do I look like a pothead?" It eases tension. You laugh. They laugh. When you get someone laughing, they tend to no judge you like they might have beforehand.

Another bit of advice is to take down/cover up your mirrors. That way you can't see yourself, even accidentally. You can't stress over any tiny imperfections in your locks or appearance. So if someone comments about your hair, you can't run home and look at yourself and try and see what they saw. You'll never be able to see what someone else saw. Not the way they saw it. This method keeps you from thinking they were right. You can only experience your appearance through how you feel with your hands.

Lastly, but it can be hard: Realize that everyone who judges you is only unhappy with themselves. Maybe not at the moment. But if they think you look bad, they are only projecting that they think they look bad. That they have to dress/appear a certain way. People who believe that have no true self confidence. You are doing something extremely brave and noble by making a visible statement that you don't want to conform to popular ideas of beauty/appearance. By doing something that not many people are doing, you should feel even better abut yourself. Just like people with huge and numerous piercings, or visible tattoos. Dreadlocks express a strength that you have that others don't. When someone insults you, they are just trying to bring you own to their level. You should, instead, stand your ground, if not try to bring them up to your level.

Really really really huge dread?

Dread Maintenance

Your dreads will essentially be roughly the size of the section at the root of the hair. Most people say that your sections should be no larger than 1 inch by 1 inch. I happen to have them of all sizes. At 3 months in I paniced about how large some of my sections were, but now I just love them and it turns out my fatter ones are my favorite ones.

getting close

Dreading Methods

If your hair parts down the center naturally, let it. Mine parts on my left side, I found that my hair is most comfortable when I let it be where it wants. I have to keep mine tied back for work as well...n a bun...and I think it would have been rather uncomfortable if I had tried to force them into a spot they didn't go naturally. That is just what worked for me. Hope you find what works for you. Happy Dreading.

Frustrating mess

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

I think looking at timelines has been the most encouraging thing when it comes to my "messy days." Your dreads ar progressing normally, and will round themselves out as they mature. Your locs are beautiful, keep on keeping on! Happy Dreading friend.

Advice needed! Scalp showing, should I split some dreads?

Dread Maintenance

The 4th month was my messiest so far....but it was also my most progressive! I really think the scalp showing thru is just your adjusting and finding it's way to where it wants to be. I am only at 6 months myself, so maybe my word isn't golden, but I did have a similiar issue between months 3 and 4, it's not like that at all now!

Advice needed! Scalp showing, should I split some dreads?

Dread Maintenance

Well when your dreads reach maturity, they will most likely be the same size as the section at the scalp. Did you twist and rip super tight all the way to the scalp. I think it may be just the way they are laying and forming now. You shouldn't cover them up all the time tho. You should let them move as freely as possible so they can swing and turn and create knotts. hope this is helpful for you. Happy dreading friend.

dying 3 week old natural dreadlocks?

General Questions

Ash blonde will not dye over top of reds or med to dark browns, without first lifting and lightning your hair color. As far as it being too soon or not good for your 3 week old dreads, I think is more of a personal preference. Some people will not put box dyes on their hair because of the harsh abraesive chemicals. I would not use the conditioner afterwards. I hope you find this information helpful and useful. Happy dreading.
