Info cards

General Questions

Yeah, something like those. LOL. Maybe something like, "Got dreads? Awesome! Did you know wax traps dirt, oil, sweat, and skin cells that DON'T LEAVE? Pay your rent, not your loctician!" haha.

Info cards

General Questions

I was just wondering... [Don't worry, there is a point to this] I research a lot of things, one of them is circumcision [I know it seems weird but when you have people constantly asking you why you didn't circ your son, it's something you spend a lot of time reading about :D ] and on several websites they have info cards that they sell for intactivists to pass out with stuff like "Cut Pumpkins, Not Babies" lol and some other things but this isn't really the place for *all* that... I'm JUST using it as an example...

Has anyone thought of making dreadlocks info cards? Like for when someone asks you about them, or when you go into a salon, maybe stick a card on the loctician's desk/counter... I thought it would be interesting to ask about.

Hair at nape of neck won't dread.

General Questions

I think that's a good idea, because I also think if you mess with them too much you can damage your hair, and you probably don't want that either. :P No problem.

Hair at nape of neck won't dread.

General Questions

The area at the nape of your neck, around your forehead, and your ears [your hairline] is where your skin can be oiliest. Oiliness will prevent dreading. If you used a starter method, I'm sure the dreads in these areas will come apart but eventually they will dread back up. Or, if you're going au naturale, they might take longer.

Here are a few things I've learned if you don't do/not do them already: don't wash your hair every day - shampoo strips your hair of natural oils and tricks your scalp into producing more than you need/you can use an alternate cleanser like bs/acv mix or some other kind of shampoo; in between washes, rinse your scalp in cold water if you must get it wet; don't play with your hair too much - not only can you untangle it, but oil from your hands will get into your hair and make it harder for it to dread.

My one and only baby dread

General Talk

Thanks!! :D I was petting my hair one day last week [sounds funny huh] and I was like O.O A dread! haha.

I'm trying to help it go faster... not because I'm impatient but because I feel like if my hair works too slowly I'll mess it up. kwim? lol.

I probably could be doing this wrong lol but I wash once a week with anti-residue shampoo, every 3-4 days with dr. bronner's, cold rinses in the shower on days that I don't wash. And I always rinse with cold. I try to blow dry my hair but sometimes I just let it be. I know I prob should wash with different stuff but haven't had the $ for EOs, and I used to wash every SINGLE day because I was told wrongly several years ago that it was healthy to shampoo your hair every day. So now I'm trying to fix oily-if-I-don't-get-washed-every-day hair. :)

My one and only baby dread

General Talk

So... I haven't combed or brushed my hair in 68 days and this is all I get?! lol.

I think I just need to stop pulling my hair back when it's in my face. Get a loose, cloth headband or something. But I'm happy about my one baby dread, nonetheless. :)

About dreads and crochet hooks

Dreading Methods

It's not uncommon. Epidural is the most commonly administered anesthetic in the U.S. You so missed the point...

Kid Ayn Gibran said:

Actually that's not a common subject seeing that most people have never had an epidural. And I, being a man, had to take a minute to remember what an epidural is...and Google to confirm my assumption. But, again I digress.

There are so many subjects I could use as examples but this may not be the place. I'll use a common one. If everybody who has had an epidural experienced back pain like *I* and 1 out of 199 [1/100 x 2] other women do, then we could conclude that epidurals are not good ideas and should be avoided. But since that's not the case then recommending epidurals is not bad advice.

Wrong. The fact that I and many other women who have had epidurals experience this kind of back pain [and sometimes worse] is why epidurals probably should not be recommended. Now apply that to dreadlocks and a method of craft meant for yarn and thread, not hair.

Easy peasy.

Hun I gotta tell you you don't look old enough to have frosted your hair in the 80s! :P

Heather said:

actually it was called a frosting cap. it was a bonnet type thing (not a tube) with holes in it. my mom was a hairdresser and she used to do my hair when i was in high school. i hated that thing but that's how we all got our "farrah" hair in the 80's. lol!

soaring eagle said:

what comment left? im confused haha

but i'll make it simple

panterra has been doing hair 30+ years back in the day frosting was accomplished by taking a tube with lil holes in it they then put the hair into the tube and using a very small crochet hook identicle to the type yused to crochet dreads they incert it into the hole and use it to pull small tufts through the holes to be bleached to give that frosted look however it was discovered that even this very gentle use (not thrustring it through a solid dread)

they stopped doing that cause it broke and damaged the hair too much thats why they now do the foil wrap way

hairdressers learned how bad crochet was decades ago

Woops my comment left. Lol. I was making it simple for others. *sigh*
