to brush or not to brush?

General Questions

I've been having a huge internal debate the last few months as to whether or not I should try to brush out my dreads and start over... but I don't know if it would be different the second go around. I am at almost one year. My biggest dislike is that a lot of my dreads are A LOT thicker on the bottom than at the top, pretty uneven. They shrank up a lot on the bottoms and the top halves just kind of dreaded straight (how I wish all of my hair would have dreaded) With more time will they eventually round out a little more? Idk. I guess any comments would help. I have some pictures uploaded in my photos. Thanks. :)

Hair dye!!

General Questions

If you do red orange and purple you will have to be extra careful when washing your hair too. The purple color can bleed onto the orange or red.

Hair dye!!

General Questions

I bleached/dyed my hair right before I stopped brushing. I waited about 2 1/2 months before re-dying just to try to allow some knots to form. Whatever you do, just make sure you rinse the dye out really well.

Dyed dreads

Dread Maintenance

Does anyone here color their dreads? I just re-dyed mine all blue for the first time since I stopped brushing my hair (about 4 months ago). The dying wasn't so bad, as I got my roommate to do it for me, but I'm thinking the bleaching my roots part is going to be a pain in the ass. Does anyone here do that, & if so do you have any tips? Also, wondering if any of the shampoos are better for dyed hair (less likely to fade, etc). I've noticed with my hair, it tends to fade on top of my head where I scrub it way faster than my ends... which is kind of annoying but maybe something I just have to live with.

knotty boy dread bar soap ... good or bad?

Dread Maintenance

Thanks so much for the info. I was really worried for a second. After this bar, I'll definitely be getting a different brand. I don't really care to support those people.

knotty boy dread bar soap ... good or bad?

Dread Maintenance

So I've just been reading horror stories about wax, crocheting, etc. (which I will never do) and realized knotty boy and dreadheadhq are both horrible sites. Then I realized I've been using knotty boy dread bar soap. Is this okay? Is there anything bad in this soap that I should be aware of? I tried looking it up on here but didn't find much.

Anyway, it just kind of freaked me out. It seems to be working fine (just started natural dreading a month ago). My hair seems to be separating quite nicely... If anything, it seems like the soap almost makes my hair too clean, haha. Idk if that's good or bad. Ok sorry for rambling.

Introduce Yourself

I've been lurking on this site for a while now so I decided why not make a post. I'm very grateful that I found this site before starting my dreadlocks. I almost got sucked into "getting" them in a salon but between this site and a good friend I've learned that natural is the best.

It's been less than a month since I've started this journey but I already feel more like myself. Just officially making the decision has felt so freeing... I've wanted dreads since I was around 12 (now 24).

Few things about me: 24, crafty, creative, love all things vintage & diy, I repaint vintage furniture, am apprenticing under a professional upholsterer, & have been sober for almost 1.5 yrs. :) Anyway, just wanted to say hey.
