Updated 1/7 Dreadlock journey 1 week, 4days!

Member Journals and Timelines

First day of my dreadlockjourney. Brushed my hair for the last time last night and washed my hair with baking soda this morning. I'm going to try to do the all natural/neglect method and i may fall to do some tnr. WISH ME LUCK :)

Before my journey It is now the end of the 3rd day. My waves are much more defined and sectioning themselves a little bit. I decided not to tnr though i did do one section of tnr at the nape of my neck so i could have a formed dread to remind me what my goal is. So yes SE i swear not to tnr!

Day 3

1 WEEK!!!

I cant believe its already been a week. I have 5 or 6 dreads at the nape of my neck that are knotting up very nicely and already looping a little bit and one has a clump on the end. my single tnr dread is looping up by the root. My hair is basically all sectioned and alot more wavy. I have little sections of dreading happening all over my head. I had no idea changes would be so quick!

Before showering

I don't know how to rotate pictures on here, sorry

After shower

So much progress!! 1 week and 4 days. Im having alloy of fun with beads now. Theyre really helping to knot things up. Sorry, for the photo dump!

apple cider vinegar

Dread Maintenance

I have a bar of bucks bar shampoo on the way, I was wondering if in the early stages of dreading would it be recommended to still use an apple cider vinegar rinse? Oh, and I have hard water.

Thanks. As soon as the holidays are over, I'll have a bottle and a bar of that on the way!

That sounds like a fabulous idea to just soak and be clean. Unfortunately, I have hard water making Castile soap a bad idea. Does your hair just look greasy if hard water is used w Dr Bronners? Or is it deeper than that?

Yes, I agree. I've heard, read, and researched terrible things about SLS. I've just recently turned my house natural. I make our cleaners, detergents etc. Also - side note - 2 weeks now of not smoking cigarettes!

Thank you so much. So only the slsulafates leave residue? Fragrances and other ingredients are fine?

Is lush's squeaky green desirable for dreads? Area their liquid shampoos safe for dreads?

General Questions

Thank you SE and everyone for your help! I'm starting the babies the first of the year and I can't wait. Absolutely excited, I feel like this is what I'm supposed to do :-)

Say I have my locks for a year or 2 and I decide I no longer want dreads, will soaking in conditioner and olive oil work? If it does, whats the condition of hair like after its all done?
