Messy Stage?
Just embrace it.
You should see my pictures, hehehe. Mine are extremely messy and more since I started with crochet method (I'm going for my 5th month dreadiversary in 2 weeks approximately).
Most part of the time I let my locs to fly free and just when I go outside and I have to look "nice" I just use a piece of fabric I use as a hairband and nothing else. You can try with that 
We just have to be patient with them, in the end they are gonna look pretty, each one with their own personalities, they are gonna be unique.
