It's actually kind of weird that I found this today. When I first read the title of the discussion I immediately thought of a family friend. Then I read thru all the replies and looked at all the pics and again I thought of Alissa. THEN I went outside for a smoke and a look at the moon (it's an amazing orange/salmon color due to some fires in eastern Washington and riding very low on the western horizon). While I would outside it dawned on me that today is Alissa's 23rd birthday. She would have been 23. In May this year she was vagabonding around the country with her boyfriend. They were in South Carolina for the Spring. Alissa was crossing a dark street with a high speed limit and hardly any stop lights (so no crosswalks) and was hit by car and killed. She was the purest soul I've ever met. When someone says the word 'hippie' it's her face I see. She was just an amazing young woman...anyway this is Alissa...

She had her dreads for maybe 3 years. These pics were taken in 2008.

This is her brother Kalan. Who is a complete mess without his sister. His dreads are maybe a year old. But they're amazing.

She went to the 2009 Rainbow Gathering. I know of that one for sure, she may have gone to others. I'm not exactly sure of where all she travelled to, she may have hit the Philly area. There are some good vids of her busking in Portland, OR as well.I usually find discussions by the activity feed, this one must have slipped by me!

No, he had them before she died. I'm not sure why or when exactly he started them. I saw him in June when they were here for Alissa's memorial, he was self-medicating heavily. It was really hard to carry on a conversation with him so I didn't get the chance to ask him how old they were.

When I first decided to think about doing dreads, I was thinking of doing a combo of fake/real for a "mixed media" effect (I'm a mixed media artist and felt I needed this for myself as I've never been happy with my hair, EVER). So I started poking around on forums and looking at pictures and lo and behold I saw EXACTLY what I had in mind to start with:

(forgive me, Slang, for just tossing your pic out randomly but this is like a dream)

She did wool extensions which I'm not really wanting to do. Somewhere along the lines after doing my dreads I might make some fun add ons for instant length (I miss my LONG hair) out of fake hair (I've read allllll about it). But ever if I don't go a faky route, I look forward to having colorful dreads.

I found this amazing flickr pool titled "Women with Long Dreads." I'm not able to copy and paste any of the images here, but there are over 1300 (!) incredibly awesome and inspiring images.
