Hi! My name is Renna.

I have had most of my dreads for about 7 years and the top layer for about 4 years. The bottom layer of my hair is dreaded with the top loose.

I started out my dreads by back combing them and palm rolling. For maintenance I rub the root base to get the hair fuzzy, crochet the loose hair in the dread and use a rubber band at the base of the dress for about 2 days or so until the roots lock.

Hey Renna, welcome on here!

Using the crochet hook for maintainance can cause damage to your hair , you should avoid that tool! You have your dreads for a couple of years now, so in my opinion there is no need to maintain them that way. It is normal that the roots are lose one or two inch because the hair grows, but it will dread right back up, without special treatment. Just washing on a regular base at least once a week and a little separating if needed! Then you would not need the rubber bands eather.

You can read some helpful informations in the dreaducation section right atย  Dreadlock Forums.

Hello @renna! Welcome, and beautiful dreadlocks! @dread-stpauli is right, the crochet hook causes damage to the hair. Damaged hair can result in weak places in your locks!๐Ÿ˜ฑ Having said that, your photos make me impatient for my own locks to be mature.๐Ÿ˜Š

nobody mentioned that root rubbing can pull literaly half your hair right out of your scalp

dreads dont need any of what your doing ive had mine 27 years, they are 10 feet long and I have never done anything to them at all..not even palm rolling

and no backcomb to start they started by going camping..thats it..
