do you hold the beliefe that all things are related as the mitake ohyasin belief of the Lakota/ does that mean your culturally appropriating Lakota culture by feeling a relationship between all things in the universe
there are certain things ..that have run through as all sorts of cultures and been part of the development of culture since prehistory
and although the oldest fossil of man (i believe way pre homo-sapiens) were found in Africa mankind has always had dreads till they figured out ways to prevent it
i believe the earliest combs were in use in egypt
now all human beings have dreaded as long as they had hair
native American tribes had dreads before any contact with African culture as an example
Thanks SE, I appreciate your words and advice. After a lot of thought I don't feel that I am appropriating the way I wear my hair from any particular culture. My hair is following its natural coarse and has in effect become a non style. I look at my workmates and each one of them has appropriated a style from somewhere; the balding man who shaves his head completely, the young punk who gels his hair into spikes, sideburns, goatees, Bieber style, pony tails, buzz cut - they have all copied someone in an effort to make themselves fit an image or look more attractive. I dont think dreads will make me any more attractive ( probably the opposite ) but as a fashion or style it is totally unique to me. The more wild my hair becomes, the less I care what people say or think.
Imagine that, after 56 years my hair may be the thing that sets me free.
I am going to have fun with this
Three months into this journey. My hair is dreading nicely. i went through a stage where I had to separate them every night but it is now only occasionally so I guess that means that the individual locks have found their place . The reaction from workmates has been mainly positive and no one has been overly surprised as I have been known to do some unconventional things at times. The only downside is that it creates pressure points when I wear my motorcycle helmet for any length of time and I do like my long rides so I will have to do something about that . Crappy pics but you can see the progress. Cheers
11 month update. I am really pleased with my dread progress. I deal with hundreds of members of the public each day and always receive favourable comments and plenty of smiles. Even my 80 year old mother likes them. Thanks Soaring Eagle for your support and advice
