yea its not esential to start over thats a choice you will have to make yourself

but you should let that friend know why crochet is such a bad method

To be honest man, I started with back combing, didn't do the hooking though, and I love mine! At first I was bummed because I was worried they would be stiff or not look like real hair or something. The nice thing about dreads though is they seem to undo themselves from the back combing anyway! So I think you will be fine. I mean some of my back combed dreads came undone comepletly and have already reformed anew! Goodluck with the journey friend
