My dreadlocks were only a mere 2 months old and the grime was not something that was getting any better so I decided to go ahead and take them out, which was a bummer but if there was a problem I wanted to deal with it before they matured any more. 2 month old dreads are just little babies so it was not that big of a deal.
Upon opening them up I began to realize that it was my own fault in the beginning for not rinsing the hair dye out enough in the beginning. My hands were a brownish-black from the dye and it was just a mess.. gross. Lesson learned there and let that be a lesson to other people! Rinse rinse rinse. When you think you've rinse enough, rinse some more lol.
@Nikkiah, I am not sure as I am rather new to the whole thing, but I do hope that someone can answer on here and offer some insight for you!
