Crunchy Mummy, glad you found this site like I did, it does a world of help. The width of your dreads, no matter on how they are started, when mature will be the width of the section where it meets the scalp. They will slowly loop and shrink, becoming thicker. Dreads formed by T&R or backcombing will need to loosen on their own first in order to dread, that is the process, so they will not look how they do right now. Formed dreads will also go through a frizz stage in the beginning. I would leave the rest of your hair to free form dreads, all hair will do it naturally, just use patience. No comb, no conditioners or gels....read the dreaducation page at the top for fantastic tips. Whatever your decision, they will look great, enjoy

My new book Ban The Taboo Vol 1
My head had many different starter methods. I backcombed some in the beginning. Then I went on the road. I met someone that introduced me to TnR. So I did it to a few of mine. I also had a couple of braids that dreaded. The rest of my head I left to go neglect. I also have a ton of baby dreads that started out as new growth and dreaded on their own. So i have these short dreads all going crazy with loops and bumps and zig zags all mixed in with my mature dreads
I know the mixture of starter methods look different now, but when they mature....you won't be able to tell which were which.
