The Three Month Dread

So I've been looking every where for a place I can talk about my dreads with out some one rolling their eyes because they don't care and they just think I've gone insane and my head looks like a bird landed on it and has made it's home some where in here.

I began my dreads about thee months ago and I am loving them. I do have my moments of doubt when I see what others dreads look like and then look at my own bumpy, odd shaped, loose at the scalp, and some times impossible to understand dreads, but I LOVE THEM.

I was just wondering if anyone else has ever looked in the mirror early on in their dread story and thought..."oh god...what did I do?" It only happens on occasion or when I think about past years of curling and cutting and dyeing...I was very much one of those kids who changed her hair every other month it seemed. But I'm commited and I love what I've chosen to do. I love the low maintance. The fact that I don't put chemicals near my hair on a daily basis..and I LOVE putting random things in my hair and having them stay :)

So I guess it's just be nice to hear your eaerly stories for those who have been there before and know what it's like to occasionally wake up and think..."Oh God...what happened last night?" :)

And for those of you who are new like me...I'd love to hear if you're dealing with the same :) I'd love to see photos and anything else you'd like to share :)

I have the solution. At least it worked for me:

Take your mirrors down. Or cover them up. When you can't look at yourself on a daily basis, you can't judge yourself harshly. If they feel good when you touch them, you will always feel like they must look good too

Your story is so like mine! I was always dying, cutting, straightening, curling, sticking stuff in it, something different every month, sometimes every week! I did always want dreads though :D

I've only had mine about a week or so, but I couldn't love them more! I never predicted the complete, immeasurable, unparalleled joy of getting up and getting straight into my day without having to do my hair! :P It's amazing. They have their own personalities and I can't wait to get into the "months" as opposed to "weeks" where they really get wild and loopy. I put up some photos of my fuzzy head last night.

This site is so great that people starting out like us have such a great, varied and knowledgable support group to let us know, whatever they're doing, it's the right thing :D

Peace to you man, and happy journey x

I did have those "oh noes!" moments. I still have moments of meh, but the first week I had to resist everyday brushing them out because my hair is ber thin and my tnr dreads were not only super skinny, but sparse as well. But I've embraced the mess and I'm so glad a lot my my tnr dreads fell out and are "redoing" themselves. They look much better and my baldness is being covered. I still can't just get up and go because I #1 have a short top layer (3-4") and bangs that need patted into submission, but my eyebrows havnt fully grown back in, so I'm still shading them in. But I'm happier everyday with my hair. I love playing with it and feeling all my loops and bumps. Hey are all in the back so I don't really see any of them but I know they are there. I have even grown to love the mess. My mom and I went out to dinner a few days ago and she asked me if I was going to do anything to my hair because it looked wild and I said sure, shook my head out and smiled. She just sighed. It was funny.

When I was about 6 weeks into my dreads I thought they looked terrible, I hated the way it felt on my head and they seemed to be returning to the 'I hate you and you can't make me do anything' phase that my undreaded hair was constantly in. I considered crocheting (I know, I know, but I didn't do it.) I also thought about just brushing it out. Thankfully, I stuck it out and now I'm loving how they look. They feel much better and I'm very happy that I stuck it out. It might seem bad now, but it gets better. Mine is currently very loopy and crazy, there are pictures on my page. The no mirror thing is a brilliant idea, however that would never have worked for me, as I need something to see my make-up in the morning haha. But I did use a small little mirror instead of my larger one, and I only looked at my hair in detail every few days to check for congos... I've now realized I'm rambling, but anyway, my point is it does get better, and all the weirdness is just making your dreads unique from everyone else. :D
