(SE is there a better way of doing this?)
I've been conditioning for a week. 3 times in total. Last one was today followed by my weekly shampoo and they do seem a bit softer and less stiff.
Once they had dried I decided I would see how much I could comb them using my wooden beard comb that's in the picture.
So far I have combed out the 3 at the front. I intend to comb the rest out over the next few days with a couple of conditions and then try combing again after I shampoo next Sunday.
As you can see in the pics there is still a "spine" in each one and they are still pretty well crocheted and still hard towards the roots but I'm hoping after another week of conditioning they will be soft enough to comb.

You've decided to comb yours out? I thought that would cause more breakage to the hair more than anything.. I guess not though?
I think I'm just going to let mine do their own thing and not mess around with them too much, besides washing/drying/conditioning.. I'd like to see your progress though, if you can manage to keep updating.
Mine are getting more fuzzy and loose every time I wash them.

One thing that's good is how much length I've got back. Lost so much when it was crocheted.

you will lose handfuls of hairs already broken by the crochet.. plus some extra damage from the combing out, but if your slow gentle and patient, use lots of conditioners and dont go at it aggressively thats pretty minimal by comparison

yes, and, well somewhat no. by that i mean they might never look truly natural. but after about 3 years the obvious crocheted look might fade. 3 being typo9cal, if they loosen enough that can be a lot less
after several months loosening they will dread normally however. just still have some visual signs of crochet much longer

Also, I have to wear a dreadsock made of 90% viscose and 10% elastane. I need to as I'm a gardener so there's loads of debris and dust from hedge cutting and blowing. Will this impede the process of recovery or is the material damaging for the dreads? Is there any alternative thats better..
The more I think of how fucked my dreads are the more I want to just cut them off.. which would be devastating. Don't think I can comb them out either. They looked like they've been tied and interlocked throughout and tight enough I couldn't even get a comb through..
