I don't know what you would call these pieces, they're not dreadlocks

theyre curly and my hair seems to shrink even as its growing (the top is much heavier but the back keeps tightening up).

The back of your head looked exactly like mine when I started my journey 5 years ago. It was looking at myself I cut mine though shortly after that, but in 2013 decided to go for it again.

 So far I'm 25 months in, and just like everyone else will tell you, it takes time. Since you seem to have the same type of hair as mine, you might start to see some sort of progress around your 6-8 month mark. Then again I think that's the norm now for people starting.

They all sectioned awesomely without any interference. Other than separating often. Though all of my dreads may be knotted up, most of them have around 1-2 inches of loose hair at the tips. Which isn't a bother at all. They're about shoulder length...um I think I need to make a video to show the progres
