I'm a registered nurse with not one but two jobs! I work full time in a busy intensive care unit, and one day a week in a chest pain observation unit. My dreads are five months old, and I've lost tons of length, so to keep them neat I wear a wide headband and clip the back up in a claw. Management has largely ignored them, and the only patient/family comments have been positive. As others have said, being able to project capability and competence is most important. Otherwise, being as clean and neat as whatever your job requires is the rest of it. So far, even in south central Arkansas, people have been pretty accepting. Either that or their mamas taught em if they didn't have anything nice to say, to not say anything!!

I teach yoga for a living which is very nice...nobody cares about what you do with your hair!
I am a domestic godess and I teach dance technique and choreography. I think that if your lifestyle and dreads would cause you to forfeit a job, you should consider if that is the type of job you were really meant to have. In America sometimes we tend to "live to work" instead of "work to live". Your job should be a means to help you enjoy your life, it shouldn't define your life. Seek a career that makes YOU happy, and you'll find that when you find the perfect balance, it will all blend seamlessly together.
I'm studying E.C.E too! :D In the fall I'll be placed to work in a daycare one day a week to develop my skills. Not worried about what my hair looks like, since it's all part of the program. I can worry about my hair when it comes to being hired, but hopefully I'll be able to be competent enough that my hair won't matter

I'm working on a degree of early childhood education so that I may start a daycare, that is my dream I love little kids and they are young enough at that age to not judge and maybe it can be instilled in them to be open minded and it may follow them thru their lives! The people I know personally or know OF near me, that have dreads, one works at a factory, one works as an artist/musician, and one works in our zoo with the kangaroos
