sorry its not the best pic but as you can see its not at the roots (ive got plenty of those and they dont bother me) its about half way down the dreads or so,,,

with those I would use a upholstery needle and quilting thread.....sewing them back into the dread...please let me know if you try it and how it works for you.peace
