I carry around a whole sleeve of a shirt I can use it for everything.. tie hair back cover hair when in the bush etc

rubber bands work for me. I use the clear kind. They haven't melted, they just break. Maybe you could look into that if you must have them?
I use mine for keeping loose hairs together and fattening up the flat dreads in the back Just make sure you air dry your hair. You don't want mildew in between the rubber band.

they might not meltbut they might break? that's no better as  when they break they can break leaving lil pieces still stuck in the dreads
