Is there a "proper" way to seperate dreads?

I've got 2 month old dreads. My hair is super fine and although it is reluctant knot up the dreads I put in, it LOVES to try to make them congo. I pull them apart once or even twice a day. Is there a correct way to do it to minimize hair ripping? If I miss a few then when I find them again I can hear the hair tearing and I hate it!

I'd like to know, too. I've basically more or less stopped separating altogether because I don't like the sound. I'm a month and a half in.

grab the 2 dreads and pull. Just make sure you get all the connecting hairs apart. The less you separate the harder it's going to be unless you want a giant mono dread!

........ what you can avoid is ripping them from the roots... or you can try pulling one hair at a timeso they slip out of the other dread.... i think that would be exhausting.... hair ripping will happen though.
