thicker dreads are more likely to have issues if damp a lot and come in contact with the spores..that are airborn
be aware that some molds are toxic, some cause symptoms a lot like schitsophrania . hallucinations.. pink mold i don't know much about though i think its common and safer then some (i think)
dreadlockshampoo.com makes rot knot that kills mold.
ofcourse its meant to be used on dreads, but it was tested on that hard to kill black mold that's common in most showers.
i would not leave any mold unchecked out of laziness because so many have health complications.
what to avoid
residues that build up and lead to mold
not drying properly, wearing the dreads up ied back, or under a hat while even slightly damp
avoid towel drying as that can wipe out progress
dirt you cant avoid so just wash as often as you need to to be clean
but lint..you can't avoid it completely but might want to decrease the exposure to causes of lint
microfiber pillowcases and sheets are 1 example
don't play with your hair too much
and avoid caring aabout what other people think or say
