How to get sand out of dreads?

I just got back from a camping trip, and there's a lake there with all kinds of slim and sand and gunk. I was wondering if there's anything out there that will get all these little bits out so my head isn't so itch from the sand.

although this has not happened to me yet, I would think that after a strong head rinse under the bath tap, fill the tub with water and lay down to soak you hair, let it float around, move it with your hands, take a book and some tunes to pass the time. ...peace
