If you must use Dawn, are you using only a few drops mixed in a container with water and then pouring that over your head?
You can use Baking Soda with hard water, just boil it first. I did this for my hard well water and it worked like a charm. Just boil a pot of water and use that. I would let the water cool and settle down first and pour gently so as not to mix it so that if there were any sediments it would stay in the bottom of pot. When pouring it out, just leave the last bit of water from the bottom. Voila! Your 5 cups of water is now ready for the 1/2 cup of baking soda.....Peace

I am mixed too, I use Dr. Bronners sometimes and African Black soap. My hair is crazy dry, but that is genetics man! If you want sheen that is one thing, but our hair does what it does, personally I'm not worrying about the dryness until my hair matures a bit more. Once I add anything to my hair it does this crazy thing of going completely straight until it dries, that includes water. I used to just use dial body soap for my hair, or whatever was in the shower, I wouldn't use dish soap, though because it is meant to break down oils,
Just for an experiment I did a natural thing, luke warm water, no soap no shampoo. My skin liked it, I didn't smell, and my hair kinked right up. You might want to give that a try if you don't have any dandruff issues. This is just keeping in mind our hair is a tad different.

I was actually not adding any water to dilute it at all! :P I was just putting it straight onto my hair. diluting it seems like a pretty solid idea. Boiling the water also sounds like a solid idea but i live in a dorm.. we dont have stoves. but i will probably switch to b-acv washes once i return home. If the water doesnt rinse it well i will try the boiling thing. Man i rinse my hair completely wet everytime i take a shower with just warm water. Its the only way i can get my hair from sticking flat to the side of my head when wake up in the morning. it makes my hair kind of straight while it is wet but by the time it drys back up it is virtually exactly the same as before i rinse it. I figured the break down of oils would be a good thing to get out whatever residue was in there. I had been using jamican lime and mango which i found out isnt the best soap to use.

dish soap is fine for removing wax or product build up but regular use will really wreck your hair. dish soap is meant to remove grease from dishes so using it on your hair will remove all oils in your hair. stripping your hair and scalp of its natural oils will cause dandruff and brittle hair. dreads should never be brittle. if you can't order shampoo from bucks county right now than get yourself to a health food store and pick up a good organic shampoo. natures gate and kiss my face make nice gentle shampoos that work well for dreadlocks.
