crazy roots at the nape of my neck

I've started to form some nice baby dreads at the nape of my neck and I have to seperate them often. Since I've started seperating, I have a huge mess of hair at the roots. I feel like this is normal and to be expected, but still nervous about it. Should it be seperated closer to the scalp?

if theres nothing connecting dread to dread dont bother whats at the scalp will always be intertwined
