I could go the whole wax is evil way too, but really, It's not worth it. Pus it can sometimes come off like a "holier than thou" way.
So yeah there is a new wax remover soap from dreadlockshampoo.com. But you could get some anti bacterial dish soap and lots of hot water. Make a pot of water as a hot as you can handle and squirt a ton of the soap into it. Dip each lock in individually and with your hands work the soap into each lock for a few minutes each. When you dump out the water you'll see how nasty it looks. Just imagine that all that gunk was once in your hair.
Wash your hair afterwards to get the soap out. You will have to do the process before you wash every time. It can take weeks to months get get all the wax out. If even a little bit is left, it can cause mildew and mold in your hair. So even if you think it's all gone, do it a few more times to make sure.
Once all the wax is out, you'll realize that your hair was not that locked up in the first place. After 3 years, there might be some knotting, but no where near as much as you thought.
Like Tara said, the natural method is easy. Just stop combing or doing anything. Just wash and separate. If you need them to look tidy, tie them back or wear abandanna. But just so you know, tieing them back will slow the process down. So whenever you can, let them hang free.
