My hair keeps clumping together

I have Afro-textured hair. I am using the natural method to get dreads . What I do is basically wash and separate. Because of my hair's texture, I find myself separating every day after I'm done in the shower and after I've oiled my scalp with some olive oil but it seems to just bunch up together over time. I can feel my hair dreading, but it never seems to form separate dreads and it has been 4 months. Is this normal?

By bunch up, I mean that it looks like an afro more than separated dreads.

maybe your seperating too much seperating would be dreads if theres no seperate sdreads formed theres no dreads to seperate let them form then seperate 1 from another so they dont grow togetger
