Varnish wooden beads?

Ok, my sister just gave me a load of wooden beads from old necklaces, the holes were tiny so I drilled them out, no problem there. However the beads had been varnished or 'finished' some how and the newly drilled holes are 'raw' wood - if that makes sense. I managed to lightly sand the insides to smooth them out a bit so they don't scag my hair but was wondering if I should varnish the insides of the holes. I was just thinking that when I wash my hair they might absorb water or something and end up going weird. What do you guys think? Should I just get some varnish and give the insides a light coat, just to be on the safe side?

Good point, I'll just put one or two in for now and see what happens. I can always take them out if there is an issue. :)
