Breaking congos, losing hair

I had no progress for almost two months and, all of the sudden, POW! I have some amazing dreads in the making. I keep trying to break up congos, but they keep re-forming in the same areas, overnight. Also, when I break them up, I seem to be losing a lot of hair. Is this normal?

When they're dry, I just start at the root, and separate downward. It makes a ripping round and stuff. I thought it was normal, but I am losing some hair. Maybe I'm being too violent?

Should I do it when they are wet or dry?

the way u are doing it is how some ppl split 1 dread into 2 ajnd yea i would imagine it would cause hair loss and its always easier to do when wet
