Well I'm new, obviously. I started dreading my hair on Nov 6th, 2010. I keep having to backcomb them because it seems as though they weren't tight enough, and I washed them way too soon so they unraveled (I washed my hair after like...5 days, with the wrong soap D;)So I do have some questions, and I would also like to sayHEEEELLLLOOOOO my name is NIko! :DOkay so questions...1. I know it's pretty gross, but I have dandruff, or however you spell it. It's on my scalp and it's not pretty. It's not that bad though...what do I do?2. Is a homemade sea salt accelorator going to do anything negative to my dreads since they are so new?3. Well...too late, I already sprayed them on the 2nd day, and I think that's why my scalp started itching so bad.4. What. The. Hell are these bumps on my scalp? >:|Thanks :D

sea salt is very drying. It does help the knotting process some....but you wanna keep it off of your scalp. Your journey has only been for 10 days...so you are gonna experience unraveling. It takes at least a year for a dread to mature. What you have done is start the process. Now stop backcombing....excessive backcombing is only gonna damage your hair....it isn't gonna make that year pass any quicker.

Ok so should I take all my elastics out, and what do I use to get my hair clean? Just BS rinse? How often should I do that/? I apologize if there is a place on this website with all these answers.

1) Dandruff is pretty common when starting dreads. It usually goes away as your scalp adjusts. Keep 'em clean and make sure you rub your scalp enough to remove the dead skin while you're washing. I'd recommend the baking soda / ACV rinses. Make sure you use the ACV rinse afterwards if you go that route otherwise you will have dandruff.

2 & 3) Not sure if there are any negative effects on young dreads. I wouldn't think so - but if you think it might be causing dandruff, stop using it. Don't be in a hurry to have dreads - it's a long process and before you know it you'll appreciate seeing the changes your dreads make as they knot up.

4) Not sure what the bumps are, could be small scabs if you've been itching a lot.

Also, you probably shouldn't keep backcombing. It's normal for some or even all to fall out. They'll dread up on their own. Backcombing / TnR are just used to kick-start the process.

Good luck with your dreadventure :)

yes take those rubber bands out right now !! They break your hair for one thing for another they keep your hair from moving around and making real knots. and they leave indentions. Clean hair dreads faster. So wash em when they get dirty. I wash mine about once a week, but more often won't hurt your hair

Ok I'll take them out, but I am going to back comb the end of the dreads just so they won't look funny and so they will knot up. What do I use to wash my dreads? Is that what the BS is for?

If you look and the first comment ....Rawsum kindly posted a link that will explain how to make the Baking Soda rinse. The acv (apple cider vinegar)rinse is explained in here too. I use it and it works great for me. Using Dr Bronners is good too just make sure it is diluted in water. It is too much to use full strength. If those don't work for you and you feel better using a shampoo.....make sure it is residue free. Don't want residue attracting dirt and mildew.
