Hi I'm Mike. I'm a 31 year old artist living in Minnesota. For the past five years I have been shaving my head because I thought I was balding. It turns out I'm not even though my hairline is receding a little bit. I have decided to try out dreads. I always thought they look cool and would fit my personality well. Currently my hair is 2 1/2" long so I'm guessing I will have to let it grow a bit longer before I can start the process. My hair is pretty thick so maybe that will help things out. Dreads and a big beard is my desired look. I was influenced by looking at pictures of sadhus in India.

Hello and welcome fellow minnesotan! Well I am no longer living there but spent the first 21 years of my life there but now have enjoyed the last year in sunny california. The rest of my family is still there so I will be back to visit. My boyfriend started his dreads with only a little longer hair than you say you have and his have started locking up, it's been only about 2 months for him. If you got the hair you might as well start them! No need to wait, the process is already a longish one. Good luck and enjoy the journey

I stopped combing and got what I think is a residue free shampoo. I have had a lot of free time today so I have been twisting different sections of hair. I'm excited to see what this process is like and how long it will take for my hair to start forming into dreads. Would it be best to wash my hair every other day but rinse it every day?

I tried washing every other day but found that my hair liked to be washed only once a week. I'd said just wash it once a week. Do a water rinse every other day or something like that. I doubt that the shampoo is residue free. I just use baking soda. Welcome and good luck. Michael Baker said:

That plan is going well. My hair is feeling a lot better since I'm not over washing it. I'm even doing the same wash cycle with my beard and it is feeling a lot softer. I still brush it though. Is finger combing still considered combing? Sister Rags said:
I will second the wash once/week, plain water rinse in between.
