Does dreadlocked hair look lighter in color?

sometimes i see pics of people with dreadlocks that have dark roots yet the dreaded areas seem to be lighter in color.

i was wondering if this is a natural occurrence due to your hair being bunched up into dreadlocks or if these people most likely bleached their hair.

Mine are darker than they were when I was undreaded. I guess it's because of the increased thickness.

Yea like SE said, the tips tend to be lighter due to longer exposure to sunlight.Personally, I think it looks B.A.

yep the sun bleaches them out easier than normal hair
