how necessary is Palm rolling clockwise root rubbing?

So I have been dreaded for a bit over a month and so much of the beauty of dreads is not having to do my hair u know. So I am wondering can I get away with not palmrolling or root rubbing? Both seem to break my hair and not do much in the long run but I also haven't been doing it enough to c results. I am washing them and keeping them separated. It takes me 2 whole hours to palm roll all my dreads and I have only done this 3 times in 5 weeks. I would love to hear peoples ideas and suggestions and personal stories on this. I already have some rediculously hilarious dreads that remind me of seaweed so funky and kinky and crazy. I like having a few but will all my dreads look like that haha if I dont do anything? If I don't do the root rubbing will the new growth just grow into the dread? I am confused on the roots still. OK whew sorry for my book. Any feedback appreciated. Bless everyone! Oh also I dont use wax just salt water and aloe from knotty boy sometimes. In my picture below I am holding examples of the crazy dreads to give u an idea :P

I can't see the help in palm rolling or root rubbing myself. Personally, I just let my crazy dreads do whatever they're going to do, and leave them be. Loose hair will naturally start dreading on it's own, but it's important that you allow them to move about freely so that new knots can form. I'd just let them do their thing and watch the progress! You'll be amazed how fast you dread when you just live life and forget about your hair!

yeah I never spent that much time palm rolling all mine,I'd do it when they were wet after a shower cuz it would help get water out, but as far as doing it as a maintenance ritual, not really,or id do it lightly when bored,they are coming along nicely in just a month!

Thank you all for sharing. I feel the same way I just was looking to make sure what I was thinking was helpful so it seems doing nothing and keeping em clean and separated is pretty sufficient! Sweet. So as far as roots do they just keep dreading? I don''t have to do anything to them? I don't care if the roots are tight but wont my hair just grow out straight if I don't do something to the roots?

thats what I thought too, however if that were the case i would have had very long straight roots by now, lolhowever i did notice my roots being longer in the first half year more than they are now, but they will lock up, its normal to have loose hair at the roots.

i palm roll my dreads all the time because i find it fun =P and lots of people tell me my dreads are straight and very round with no kinks about root rubbing i have no idea really ...

i personally have no experience with palm rolling but when i look at my friends dreads all i see a bunch of roots stuck in his hair but then again he palm rolles and twists and plays with his dreads when ever hes not doing anything so when my hair does dread and knot up im gonna try and leave it completely alone cause i dont want to have a whole bunch of white specks in my hair.

Palmrolling and root rubbing are not necessary to have great dreads. In fact, as with any maintenance method, doing it too much can even be harmful.

Crazy loopy dreads are a GOOD thing. They may look wacky for awhile, but think about what's actually happening -- it means your hair is shifting around, which means it's knotting up, which is exactly what you want! Everyone's hair is unique and there's no telling how yours will look another 1, 3 or 6 months from now... but those loops and bumps generally smooth themselves out with time as the hair knots up tightly. Palmrolling really doesn't do much, and especially when your dreads are this young, you don't want to mess with them because you might just palmroll out all the developing knots.

Root rubbing is bad for your hair and scalp, unless you do it VERY gently and very sparingly. The way DreadheadHQ tells you to do it, I'm amazed his customers have any hair left on their heads! Loose roots are normal, I know it's frustrating but please don't mess with them at this stage. Give your hair time to shift around and knot up, and soon enough the roots will be dreading up by themselves, I promise!
