I was curious as to how many i should get my hair will be anout 3-4 inches long when i start my dreads and plan on going to a place such as glenn dow to get them done. Also, I would love to hear people opinions on useing wax i was thinking about going to Dreadheadhq.com to get there kits but i have heard so many mixed stories. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Haha, you came to the right place man!Let me give you a very short overview.-Salons are evil.-Wax is evil.-DreadheadHQ is evil.lol, ok, but honestly, usually a salon stylist wont know enough about dreads because dreadlocks aren't considered a 'proffessional' hair style, so they aren't required to learn about them in their schooling. Granted there are some specialty salons for dread heads. But even still, I see going to a salon like I see adopting a child. Of course you'll love your babies, but you miss out on the fun of making them!!!Next, wax can be dangerous. It tends to build up in your dreads, and it can trap water from washing you hair, that trapped water can cause mold, which smells. But, if used correctly (and washed out thoroughly) wax can help your hair dread to an extent. Honestly tho, the risks outway the chances of being able to use wax without incident, so you're better off just not using it, or using it super super sparingly. Just be sure to wash it all out with super fuggin hot water and don't apply the wax more than once every 3 or 4 washings and be sure not to glob it on, a very thin layer does the trick.Lastly, dreadlock products (like wax) are great! they have the word 'dread' written on them, and they smell good and what not, but like wax, you really don't need them. The 'starter' kits you can buy online are just a collection of things that you can find in Wal*Mart with a little effort.Dread comb = flea comb at wally.Tightening spray = sea salt water at a 3% ratio, salt to water.Shampoo = baking soda and apple cider vinegar.Dandruff shampoo = a tea made of rosemary and thyme.Oh yeah, and don't use rubber bands, they have this nasty habit of melting into your dreads, they're like tar to remove after a few days.Dreads aren't really something you can 'make', they are a test of patience. Your hair will dread naturally, you wouldn't even have to touch it aside from washings, but for more control, without screwing them up beyond repair, just stay as natural as possible. There are so many ingredients of the earth that can help with your dreads, all you have to do is ask around here and we'll fill your dome with all kinds of tricks and secrets to having sexy dreadies!!!!KTHNXBI

ditto hahahhahaasalon es bad ideaNamaste
from someone who went the DHHQ way,,don'tT&R and neglect is far better, the wax truely screws with your locks in the long run, some of my locks act more like stiff sticks then my other locks, when i shower they feel tough/stiff afterwards, the hard feeling they give is completely unyeilding to the touch, its frustrating to be honest, (especially since i haven't used it in about 8months)follow Alden's post for substitutes, so much more convenient http://dreadlockforums.ning.com/forum/topics/if-you-used-a-dreadkit-before
