Welcome. But what do you consider root knotting? You shouldn't do anything to your roots. Any root maintenance will damage your locks. Sometimes beyond repair. Your roots need to be loose in order to knot. Young locks should have about 1-3 inches of straight hair to be healthy. When they mature, that shrinks to about 1/4 - 1 inch of straight hair. As they grow out, it knots and mats on it's on.
4 months is really not long in the process of growing locks. Mature locks take around 1 year to form. Anything you do to speed it up usually hurts them.
Welcome. Palm rolling and rubbing really damage your roots. They thin out your roots and make your locks weak. I posted a video on what only 2 weeks of palm rolling will do to your roots. The problem is that the damage doesn't show up for a while. But in a year, when you hair grows out, you'll start to see it
