Hi Claire. most people on this site have grown their dreads naturally and can answer many questions for you, also tips can be found on the dreaducation page. Some members have horror stories of the damage done by a place/salon/or person. If you want dreads for years or for life, then go the natural way, they are the healthiest and can last all your life.

If you still go to a salon to get them done, NEVER...EVER...let them add any type of wax or lotion into your dreads. All the wax does is hold the shape and does not allow the hair to dread. Wax holds in water, smells, lint and dirt. Also you will be told not to wash your hair for a month or even wash just once a month. This site recommends 2-3 times a week when going natural. Wax will stain your pillows. Wax will stain your clothing on very hot days.

Salons will also hook/'crochet your dreads for instant gratification, but the hair will be all broken inside the dread, only the wax holds it together. With natural dreads, you can always brush them out years down the road, if wanted, Crocheted dreads will break all apart if this is tried.

The dreaducation page will talk about every type of dread and the methods to get them. Just remember once you start, separate the dreads daily when they are first starting out, they join together easily. Save you money and do them all on your own. Good Luck & welcome Claire
