My city has a lot of people with locks, but many of them used wax, and quite a few people get annoyed when you tell them wax hurts the process. Here, at least, people come to find good info, so it's so much easier to help out

Welcome. If you want to clean up your locks, dresdlockshampo.com offers a great gel that is completely water soluble. So it washes out in plain water and doesn't leave any residue.
But you need to wash 2-3 times a week. A dirty scalp and hair won't lock up. Just because your hair doesn't smell or feel dirty doesn't means it's still clean. Washing helps them lock up faster too.
And like Eagle said, NEVER crochet. It only destroys your locks and makes them look frizzier in the short and long run, s you feel the need to crochet again
No worries. I know how it feels when you only know 1-2 people to ask. The thing that many people don't know is that your should never see scalp in between each lock. I see it all the time with corn rows and twisted locks. But that isn't healthy. It can take years for baldness to set in. But it does. And 10 years down the line is hard for many people to see.
