Welcome. Palm rolling really only does 1 of 2 things. If you don't do it much, it won't create lasting knots. If you do it enough to see progress, it can irrevocably destroy your locks. I have a video on my page showing what only 2 weeks did to my locks. I am still trying to fix the damage, 6 years later.
As for washing. Washing more often helps them lock up faster. 2-3 times a week is best. The less you wash, the dirtier your hair gets and the more oils it produces and doesn't strip. You need clean hair to lock healthily
All starter methods will fall apart, to varying degrees. They will get messy, there is no point trying to fight the inevitable. You should wash as normal with a non-residue, non-conditioning shampoo, a proper dread soap is best. I washed my baby backcombs every other day, they fall apart, that is good, so they can knot up properly. Some will fall apart completely and find new sections. That is all normal.
