out here in the Las Vegas desert the biggest problem is DRY. Dry hair, Dry scalp, Dry knots- I am half way thru year 2 and I only wash with tea tree oil shampoo. About once every 10 days in the winter, little more in summer. Usually natures gate or jason brands. stops all itches and feels sooo good. Last year I discovered a line called Shea Moisture. All natural and no build up. They have a coconut &hibiscus spray that smells amazing and is perfect for quick spruce ups, and I use their deep treatment mask directly on my scalp to moisturize and stop itchy spots and flaking. As far as fixing "flats" goes, I have found a gentle twist under a headband for a day or three to do wonders.

Welcome. Washing helps them mature faster. Dirty hair does not lock up. It becomes oily and slick which prevents locking. And back combing them as maintenance just resets the progress to day 1. If you keep back combing them, you will never see them mature past their infant stages.
