NYC is an incredible city. Yeah...it's true...there's a reality show out there using this for a theme now. But long before that, my punk pals and I used to have big fun dancing and goofing around to this great song (always did like Ace's version better than Hello's -- they were way too mellow). I have a sweet memory of sitting on a stoop on St. Mark's one hot summer in the 80's, listening to it on cassette in a small boom-box before we went out to CB's for a Sunday matinee. We felt like we were on top of the world.
CBGB's was such a sweet place. Hilly the owner was one of the greatest souls around (r.i.p.). I credit KISS, The Ramones, Pure Hell, Television, Patti Smith, Richard Hell and The Runaways among the bands that helped wake me up from the American Top40 pop/disco haze that was fogged over so much music back in the 70's -- especially on mainstream Chicago radio. I admit, I was into the Bay City Rollers and Frampton as much as any kid, but my mind exploded when I walked into the record store and heard The Ramones debut album and The Runaways for the first time. That first wave of punk rock really pushed things to a whole other level.
I could never afford to do any thing like that in the 80s. Then I was stuck here in Scandinava. Funny, I also got into punk after my Kiss period. Ramones, of course... but it all started with my friends brother (who lived in London) sending a copy of the single "God save the queen" with the Sex Pistols for us to enjoy. =)
I'm so glad you relate! This song is such a classic. KISS really were proud NY boys! I absolutely remember The Army!! Before I went full-throttle into NY punk rock with Richard Hell, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Pure Hell and other bands in the mid 70's, I had a lot of love for KISS (and a serious collection of Ace and Peter Criss pictures on my wall!). I have fond memories of when they played Chicago back in the 70's and the handmade "KISS ARMY" t-shirts my friends and I made for ourselves -- oh, if we were only old enough to wear the mega platform boots my elder cousin wore to their shows! I hope you're able to go back and visit as often as you want. You need to keep that connection. Did you ever make it out to CB's in the 80's for shows? I have a lot of great memories from those years, too. My old friends and I LOVED running around the Bowery and the L.E.S. It's so cool to meet you here :o) x0x
Thank you for this post. Brought me right back to NYC, that I left two weeks ago. And yes, it is an incredible city. =) I was a big Kiss fan back in the seventies. Was a proud member of a fan club called Kiss Army. =)
