Today I picked up the crochet needle...

By Hans Miniar Jónsson, 2011-12-13

Now now, before you assume the worst, read.

This spring I got an appointment for a chest surgery. Having read of other people's experiences with that surgery, namely an inability to raise arms even the slightest, I found myself in a bit of a dilemma.
Either I had to do "something" to keep my newly formed locks from combining themselves into a helmet-like congo, or I had to comb them out.
Obviously, I wasn't willing to do the latter, and so I googled and googled and googled and decided (after what was apparently insufficient research) that I would take a crochet needle and manually tighten 'em up "real good" and hope that'd do the trick.
So, I worked my way through my head of hair, lock by lock, and tightened them all.

It was only a single round of it, but that was enough to create a rather unnatural and unpleasant look to them. I figured they'd be okay, never the less, and so I left 'em that way.

Now, there's no way you can "comb out" a crocheted head of hair, not without ripping out a fair bit of hair, so for the most part, patience is the only thing that'll make this mess any better. Still, even now, over 6 months later, there are a few locks which show the obvious signs, at least in the lower half of 'em.

So, today I picked up the needle again, and begun very carefully, strand by strand, to gently pull the crocheting apart.
Never once shoving through the lock itself, but working my way, millimeter by millimeter, from the tip. Undoing almost half a lock thus far.

Now, why would I do that?

Well, the original plan was "ack! I made a mess of 'em, best let 'em grow out a good long while and then I'll just cut off the mess!"
But somehow it seemed, too easy.
To just cut away "the evidence" when there was enough "not a mess" which'd grown in behind it.
And there's something "off" in my head about just, cutting it off, at all...
So, I decided to take the responsibility for my actions to slowly undo the damage that I myself have caused.

Tell you what, it's murder on my carpal tunnel syndrome, but honestly, I think it'll be worth it in the end.

Lost alot of hair due to bad advice about dreading

By matthew g, 2011-12-13
so my moms friend whos african american did my dreads and im white, and she had me do the twist method which obviously didnt work and she told me to use bees wax which was bad to ... so i figured out that i should use the backcombing method about a week in a half in so i washed out the wax backcombed and alot of hair has fallen out from that .. .well it seems i mean my hair stilll seems pretty thick its just the ends are reaelly thin, plus some dreads are smaller than others, now i backcomb maybe once a week if needed and have ruber bands in them when needed.. i would appreciate any advice helping them lock and of any shampoos that are at a local store that are good for dreads ... thanks !!!

Shrinkage!

By Panga, 2011-12-12

Dreads are shrinking so much! I love it! The only thing I don't like is that there is SO much shrinkage that I have trouble putting my hair up now. But that just means my little babes are growing and doing their thing. Pictures to come shortly :) I switched from Dr Bronners to Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo. The Dr Bronners was way too drying on my scalp and I have hard water so it didn't always feel like it was rinsing out all the way. I'm not sure if the Suave stuff is what is helping with the shrinkage or what but I love the way my hair feels and it doesn't leave a smell at all (Bronners would leave a lavendar/peppermint smell for a few hours at least)

I wish I had never dyed my locs red , just stayed blonde ! Grrr I'm so worried about bleaching them as thier still young and I didn't know when I started dreading to not use the hooks on them , but I'm learning quickly and have stopped using the hooks and wax ! Yay for me ;)- now im just washing & keeping them apart .... My wonderful daddy gave me his gray hair at a very young age and I've always dye or bleach to cover it up , started getting gray when I was 18 maybe even 16 it sucked and still sucks ! I'm trying very HARD to love it ! ..... If anybody has bleached thier dreads can you please share how you did it ? Thanks soo very much ;)-

Day 11

By Lindsey3, 2011-12-11

Last night i washed my hair with the nag champa dreadlock shampoo bar.. first off it smells AWESOME!! second..after my hair air dried i noticed i had 2 baby dreads forming! and its only been 11 days without a comb!i am so super excited to see what else is comming! I love that about natural/neglectdreads rather than when i had them back combed at a salon, the fact that everyday they suprise you with something new is totally awesome! i love that they have the ability to just do what ever they want and form how they want! i think ill wash with the shampoo bars while they are stillbabies and my hair is just getting situated. when they figure out where they like and start dreadingthen illdo a bs acv rinse and prolly stick with that as to not disrupt the dreads.. other than that thats my progress so far! yay dreads!! : )

Don't tell me what to do!!

By Katarina Marie, 2011-12-07

Lets start off with this comment.(I need to vent a little haha) Some dude with dreads he says to me ''If you are white and plan on neglect there will be no washing your hair if you want dreads.''

NOT wash my hair?!?! Ya buddy you clearly know what you are talking about! and he also said '' Either backcomb and perm or crochet if you're white...that's my experience.''

I am having my own experience. Thank you very much :)

I guess the most popular method is crochet and I hear 'if you plan on dreading your hair why does it matter if its damaged?' I want my dreads to last a long time and it seems like a lot of people on this site have done the crochet andbackcombingand all that painstaking fuss and end up starting over the natural way. The point in me deciding to start my dreads is because I am sick of fussing with my hair! I did try a few twist and rips in my hair to see how they go but I think I am going to just stick with the natural way. I have been still filtering through the forums and what not and have been looking at others time lines. I have sent a few friend request to some purdy dreadygirls, maybe make some new friends on the webz :)

As I am typing one of my TNR newborns keeps rubbing on my hand... aww babie dready I already love you!

heheheee

Now this is a burn worthy blog.

Cheers

my dreadlock journey

By Robin Schmauss, 2011-12-07

One day, out of the blue, dreadlocks popped into my mind. I immediately began looking at pictures of people with dreadlocks online and then doing some research on them. I grew up in New Orleans, LA, so I always saw African Americans with dreadlocked hair. It was a popular style in middle and high school, from what I can remember. At one point I dated a black guy with dreads.

I'm asian with very fine, straight hair. I started to wonder how I would look with dreadlocks. I wondered if my hair would be able to lock, as well, butI really loved the way they looked!I hadn't seen many non-black people with dreadlocks, but the fewI had seendefinitely stuck in my mind forever. I thought it looked so awesome! But I never thought at the time of seeing them that I would ever want dreadlocks.

I began researching extensively beginning in June of 2011. My daughter had gone off to her grandparents' house for the summer, so I had plenty of quiet time to ponder life. The whole time she was there, I searched high and low for any and all the information I could get on dreadlocks. I looked at videos, pictures, and read things. I found dreadlockssite.com and never looked back. It was quite difficult to find a site thatdidn't promote wax or going to a salon in some shape or form. From the stories I've read here, it seems as if NONE of the people in salons knew a lick about product-free or organic dreadlocks at all! They only know theirproducts and whatnot, but dreadlocks? No. So many horror stories of failed, EXPENSIVE dreadlocks says a lot about "locticians"! PUH! (Venting, sorry.) Anyway, back to my journey!

After about2 months of research, I decided in August 2011 to twist and rip my hair into baby dreadlocks! This was about a week before a new semester began, so I was a little...nervous, but ready. I actually got a compliment the first week! Anyway, after about 2 months, in October 2011,my baby dreads loosened to where all my hair was straight again! I blamed it on the apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse, since it's quite conditioning, and I didn't dilute it. My hair has always been quite straight and silky, so although I was careful when washing and rinsing, the dreads still didn't hold, probably because of my hair texture.

Okay, soI redid my whole head, twist and rip. After another month, the bottom layer of baby dreads came loose and straightened. The top 10 or so dreads, however, stayed, somewhat, in the form ofclumps of knots maybe an inch below the roots. Anyway, when this happened, I got tired of twisting and ripping and always looking in the mirror, trying to do what i could to fix them, or style them. I decided to stop all that andlet the rest of my hair dread naturally, by neglecting. I hadaccepted that my hair would do what it wanted to do.

One good thing about all this is that through all the falling apart, one dread on the top of my headpersevered and appeared to be quite mature. I'm assuming it was the only survivor from the first set of baby dreads, and it gave me a small piece of hope to hold onto, or to wear on my head :P I now knew that one day, through patience, I would soon have more and more dreads beginning to mature. Soon, enough, today, actually, I discovered that yet another dreadlock from the top is showing signs of maturity! Yay! I'm loving the journey so far, as my dreads have done a lot of changing since the beginning, and will continue to change over time. I love my messy hair, although mature dreadlocks are gonna be so beautiful and organic and spiritual! <3

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed my dreadlock journey thus far.Peace and Love! :D

Throwing out my hairbrush! a few questions first

By Katarina Marie, 2011-12-05

I am going to quit brushing my hair and see how it goes. When I don't brush my hair for say 2 days I get a ton of matting. I'm thinking that my hair is going to dread up rather quick even though it is pretty much poker straight. I'm guessing that I can justseparatethe hair so I don't get too large of a dread? Can I still throw my hair up in a pony tail holder? Can I wrap my hair in a pillow case at night? I need to find a bandanna, 100% cotton or some other material? I want to do this right because I am convinced I am not going back! I can just image in 50 years having awesome purple gray dreads. My boyfriend thinks I'm not serious but Oh I am.lol

I am also going to quit smoking them cancer sticks, I figure they make your hair smell pretty terrible and I am used to washing my hair close to everyday. I have sensitive skin and I am hoping the ACV and BS and some jojoba oil & rosemary isn't going to mess with my scalp. I was looking around for some ways to wash my hair in between the ACV wash. I am not trying to spend a whole lot on shampoo so I think I am going to order a maylee bar. Tea Tree and Orange...yummy. It says the soap wont dry skin so I am hoping for a happy healthy scalp. I am using Tea tree shampoo and conditioner now and it is giving medandruff, my hair is getting rather long and I hate brushing out knots everyday! My scalp gets sore from all the tugging and pulling and I have had enough of this brushing thing years ago!!
