A belated welcome to the community Amanda. Each person is different in the length of time it take to grow mature dreads. Lucky ones get them in about a year, for others it can take 2 years, like myself. So be prepared for a soul opening, crazy, wild ride, you will love the journey, no matter how long it takes for you....Peace

Welcome. Locks do take some decent commitment. In fact you can't "get" them. They need to grow. Even with starter methods they will take about a year to mature.

Since you are a spiritual person, the mostfulfillingmethod is let them happen. All you need to do is throw out your combs and brushes and just wash your hair with a non-residue soap. As the knots start to accumulate, you just separate them into the size section you want, and let the knots keep forming. That's all locks are. An insane amount of intricate knotting.

There are starter methods like TnR and back combing. TnR is the least damaging of those 2. What you need to stay away from are salons, art supplies like Crochet hooks and latch hooks. NEVER use wax in your hair. Wax is meant to water seal things. You want your hair to get wet. In fact, you should wash between 1-3 times a week. The more you wash and let your hair air dry, the more and faster knots form.

Check out the dreaducation page first. Then look through the timeline forums to see what the coming weeks/months will look like

Welcome. But if I got to you in time, NEVER go to a salon. Especially NEVER go to Knotty boy. They know absolutely nothing about how to grow healthy locks. And their products are only damaging to your hair and health.

First, they use wax. Wax completely prevents locking. It "glues" down loops, knots, and bumps. Without loops and knots, you will never have mature locks. Plus wax is a hydrocarbon. It will EVER wash out,no matter how much hot water and normal soap you use. Hydrocarbons NEED a detergent to clean them out. If you leave the wax in, water and moisture will get trapped in your hair. The end result is always mold/mildew, and rotting hair. Trust me from experience, it's nasty.

Second, they crochet. Crocheting is the MOST damaging thing that can be done to locks, next to felting. Crochet needles are designed for wool and yarn. Not for hair. All crochet hooks do to hair is rips your hairs into smaller and smaller pieces. This makes your locks extremely weak and brittle. In time, continuous crocheting will cause your locks to get so weak that they can actually snap from their own weight. Also, crocheting delays progress by about 6 months, just from the first session. But added to the wax, it will delay progress by years.

All of Knotty Boy's products are not designed for locks. Their shampoo is cancer causing, and is made for hunters to only use 2-3 times a year. It's just been repackaged, and labled for locks. Their Lock Peppa doesn't work.
