Separation.

So. It has been a week since I've started not doing anything, my hair is starting to section and has waves and curls, which is amazing, since it was completely straight a week ago. My question is: when should I start separating? I mean, should I wait until I see some actual dreads forming before starting to separate, or should I start separating now, to prevent everything getting knotted together?
