river or tap wont affect hardness river might not be all that clean and free of pollutants. 2 times more water then soaps the recommended minimum
some do 20 to 1 even 40 - 1 but that's extreme
12-14-20 is a good range for most
the people who try to go ti 40 have hard water and are just trying to still use it but so watered down its almost water

just make sure you don't have hard water if u want to use bronnees..and dilute it alot
