J - i didn't realize separating like that was normal...that's really good to know! might sound silly, but, i felt a little bad for doing it, like i was somehow undermining my dread's integrity...or killing it's soul...in a way, when i separated it :/ call me crazy
SE - thanks a bunch for the support! i'm going to try to stay committed to keeping my hands off my hair...keeping in mind that they'll do fine on their own :)

your dreads are forming very nice. even going natural ive run into similar issues with locks congoing and pulling unnaturally on individual strands, separating is a must. ive got to separate a monster this weekend its experience ;)
