to wax or not to wax

i had used a little bit of wax and locking spray when i went to a dready hairdressers. I personally thought it was good to tame my hair a bit. I also find that lock pepper works quite well atfirst. However i know it doesent subsitute forhard work and time. My mate also found that too much products leaves a mess. I think its just hard to use properly. To litttle has no effect, too much leaves a disaster.Has anyone had any good expereances with products?
