native american economics - abundance and sacrifice
i remember years ago iron bear gave me a book by john fire lame deer called lame deer seeker of vissions. There was alot of intersting stuff in that boiok, however the 1 thing that just popped to mind that inspired this blog post was the economics of the tribe, what was interesting was the "system" if you could call it that ensured you had all you needed (abundance) but made very lil money (sacrifice)
members of the tribe even if unrelated concidered all family, brothers sisters uncles grandparents so if you ran a gas station and a member of the tribe stopped by for gas but had no $ to pay you didn;'t ask them to pay or deny them the gas they requested.
ofcoure if someone who you didnt call brother stopped by you could charge
this way he tribe always had enough, but not too much odf what they needed.
additionaly, to celebrate fortunes, events, and just to give thanks for all youve received you might hold a couple give aways a year , for when your son gets married, to celebrate a good harvest, any event your thankful for you call the entire tribe together and give away every single thing you own.
you go without a thing to your name till another member holds a give away and you start to replace a few of your lost items with his
\this way everything the tribe owns is the tribes though you may posses it today it maybe someone elses tomorow and yours again someday
theres something so pure in such a simple economy
wow i just saw omn tv the givaway cerimony was xcalled the potlatch and early american settlers (religios groups) banned the potlatch saying it was uncivilized to give things away!
they were re-legalized in the early 1900s though
they are most common amontgst the nw pacific tribes like the chinook
mhmm barter is better for sure
I must say, I would much rather have a resource based economy than a monetary system. Money=Debt and Debt=Money. It's a sad circus out there
