For any other hair type it doesn't create any lasting difference, and is extremely damaging. You never want to tighten your roots at all. Tight roots pulls hairs out of your scalp which thins out the root, and makes the lock weaker
If it's the twisting I'm thinking of, then it only works on African textured hair. You should just leave them be now. Just let them do whatever they want and they will be fine.
